The name Lucknow is synonymous with beautiful buildings of 'Lakhauri' bricks, auspicious pair of fishes,tiny and delicate toys and shining banks of river Gomti. As soon as this name is mentioned the fragnance of 'itra'(perfume) starts titillating your nose; the musical notes of 'raga bhairavi' and the unforgettable sound of dancer's trinklets starts ringing in your ears; and the sweetness of 'dussheri' mangoes, juicy muskmelons malai(cream) and 'gulab revdis'(sweet) descends in your mouth.The life, cuisine, language and dress of Lucknow has always maintained the unique feature of this lovely city.
Legend has it, that Laxmana, younger brother of Lord Rama, was so enthralled by this picturesque site on the banks of the river Gomti, that he decided to lay the foundation of a city there, which was called Laxmanpuri. Years of colloquial alterations changed Laxmanpuri to the present-day Lucknow.
The city rose in eminence under Saadat Ali Khan, who founded the kingdom of Avadh with Lucknow as its capital. Amongst the Nawabs of Lucknow,Nawab Asuf-ud-Daula who build the famous Asuf-ud-Dauls Imambara was a great ruler and philanthropist.Whereas during the reign of Nawab Wajijd Ali Shah, witnessed a resurgence of the Ganga Jamuni culture [the culture of unity and integrity] in all its dimensions-from the classical traditions to folklore.
As a successful synthesis of the past and the present, the city of Lucknow stands apart.The vestiges of Nawabi era are sprinkled everywhere in Lucknow.
The modern Lucknow is the capital city of the state of Uttar Pradesh.Being a influential political city of the center of India, it has all the ingredients of a metropolitan city, with an international airport, hotels, malls, multiplexes, state-of-the-art health care centers, high rise residential and commercial apartments along with universities, academic and research institutes and historical monuments.
